About this collection
Italian Herbal Liqueurs for Classic & Modern Cocktails
Explore Drinkero's selection of Amaro, the distinctive Italian bittersweet liqueur category built around herbs, roots, spices, citrus and botanicals. From elegant, aromatic styles to deeper and more bitter expressions, amaro adds complexity and character to cocktails.
What Is Amaro?
Amaro means “bitter” in Italian and refers to a broad family of herbal liqueurs traditionally made by infusing or macerating botanical ingredients in alcohol. Recipes vary considerably between producers, creating flavours that can range from citrusy and gently bittersweet to intensely herbal, spicy or bitter.
Amaro in Cocktails
Amaro can provide bitterness, sweetness and botanical depth in a single ingredient. Different styles work with whisky, gin, citrus, vermouth and other Italian aperitifs, making them particularly useful in both modern and classic-style cocktails.
- Paper Plane — bourbon, Amaro Nonino, Aperol and fresh lemon juice.
- Amaro Sour — amaro balanced with fresh citrus and sweetness.
- Amaro Highball — amaro lengthened with a sparkling mixer for a lighter serve.
Our Amaro Choice
Drinkero recommends Amaro Nonino Quintessentia for the Paper Plane. Its herbal, citrus and bittersweet character works alongside bourbon and Aperol while fresh lemon provides the acidity needed to balance the drink.
