Method

Make it properly

  2. Pour in 50 ml vodka.

  4. Slowly pour 30 ml cold fresh whipping cream over the drink.
  5. Leave the cream lightly layered for presentation, or stir gently for a completely smooth and creamy White Russian.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD WHITE RUSSIAN?

A good White Russian should be rich and creamy without becoming excessively heavy or sweet.

The vodka provides structure, while the coffee liqueur brings roasted coffee flavour and sweetness. Fresh whipping cream softens both ingredients and creates the smooth texture that defines the cocktail.

The type of cream matters. Fresh liquid whipping cream at around 30–35% fat gives the best combination of richness and pourability. Cream that is too light can make the drink watery, while very thick or whipped cream will not integrate properly.

The finished drink should feel smooth, coffee-rich and indulgent, with enough vodka character to prevent it from tasting like a dessert alone.

WHITE RUSSIAN: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS

A practical guide to making a classic White Russian, from choosing the right vodka and coffee liqueur to selecting the correct cream and getting the balance between richness and strength right.

INGREDIENT GUIDE

THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A WHITE RUSSIAN

The White Russian contains only three liquid ingredients, so the quality and balance of each one is immediately noticeable.

For the vodka, Drinkero recommends Absolut Elyx Vodka 42.3% Vol. Its smooth texture and slightly higher strength provide enough structure to remain present beneath the cream and coffee liqueur.

For the coffee component, choose a quality coffee liqueur with a clear roasted-coffee character and balanced sweetness. Koskenkorva Espresso works particularly well if you are using it as your house coffee liqueur.

For the cream, use fresh liquid whipping cream containing approximately 30–35% fat. Drinkero recommends 35% whipping cream where available.

The cream should be:

  • fresh and refrigerated
  • liquid, not whipped
  • around 30–35% fat
  • poured cold directly from the carton or jug

Avoid spray cream, sweetened whipped cream or very light coffee cream.

Balance

HOW TO BALANCE A WHITE RUSSIAN

Our White Russian uses 50 ml vodka, 20 ml coffee liqueur and 30 ml whipping cream.

The vodka remains the strongest component, ensuring the drink still tastes like a cocktail rather than simply coffee and cream.

The 20 ml coffee liqueur provides enough roasted sweetness to balance the vodka without making the drink overly sugary.

The 30 ml fresh whipping cream softens the alcohol and gives the cocktail its characteristic silky texture.

Using more cream creates a softer, richer drink. Using less gives you a stronger, more coffee-and-vodka-forward White Russian.

The result should taste creamy and smooth first, followed by roasted coffee sweetness and a clean spirit finish.

Origins

THE STORY BEHIND THE WHITE RUSSIAN

The White Russian developed as a variation of the Black Russian, the vodka-and-coffee-liqueur cocktail created in the late 1940s.

Adding cream transformed the darker, spirit-forward Black Russian into a softer and richer cocktail.

Despite its name, the drink does not originate from Russia. The “Russian” reference comes from its use of vodka.

The White Russian later became particularly famous through popular culture and remains one of the most recognisable creamy cocktails in the world.

TECHNIQUE

TECHNIQUE: BUILD & LAYER

A White Russian does not require shaking.

Fill a rocks glass with ice, add the vodka and coffee liqueur, then stir gently.

Pour the cold fresh whipping cream slowly over the surface.

For a visually layered drink, pour the cream carefully over the back of a spoon or directly in a slow stream.

For a smoother, fully integrated White Russian, stir the cream gently into the drink before serving.

Both styles are correct — the difference is mainly presentation and texture.

Serving

HOW TO SERVE A WHITE RUSSIAN

Serve the White Russian in a rocks glass over plenty of ice.

The drink can be presented with the cream floating visibly over the darker vodka-and-coffee base, creating the distinctive marbled appearance seen in your Drinkero image.

Alternatively, stir everything together for a uniform creamy coffee colour.

A classic White Russian does not require a garnish.

Serving options:

  • Classic: Rocks glass over ice, cream lightly layered
  • Smooth: Stir the cream completely into the drink
  • Large cube: Serve over one large ice cube for slower dilution
  • Richer: Increase the cream slightly for a softer finish

Questions about the White Russian

What is a White Russian made with?

A White Russian combines vodka, coffee liqueur and fresh cream, served over ice.

What type of cream should I use?

Use fresh liquid whipping cream with approximately 30–35% fat. Drinkero recommends 35% whipping cream where available.

Should the cream be whipped first?

No. Use liquid whipping cream straight from the refrigerator. Do not whip it beforehand.

Can I use milk instead?

You can, but it creates a much lighter and thinner drink. For the classic rich texture, whipping cream is considerably better.

Can I use 20% cream?

Yes, but the cocktail will be lighter. 30–35% cream gives the more classic, silky White Russian texture.

What vodka should I use?

Drinkero recommends Absolut Elyx Vodka 42.3% Vol. Its smooth character works particularly well with coffee liqueur and cream.

What is the difference between a Black Russian and a White Russian?

A Black Russian contains vodka and coffee liqueur. A White Russian adds cream, creating a richer and softer cocktail.

Should a White Russian be shaken?

No. It is usually built directly in the glass. The cream can then be layered or stirred into the drink.

Does a White Russian need a garnish?

No. A classic White Russian is normally served without garnish.
