WHAT MAKES A RUSTY NAIL?

The main question is how much Drambuie to use.

Too much can make the cocktail noticeably sweet and obscure the character of the Scotch. Using 40 ml Scotch and 20 ml Drambuie keeps the whisky prominent while still providing the honeyed character that distinguishes the drink. drambuie.com

Dilution is equally important. Because there is no juice or mixer, a short stir with good ice softens the alcohol and integrates the two ingredients without making the drink watery.

RUSTY NAIL RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS

Few classic cocktails are simpler than the Rusty Nail. There is no citrus to squeeze, syrup to prepare or shaker to use. The drink is built from just Scotch whisky and Drambuie. That simplicity makes the proportions important. Scotch provides the dry, malty and oak-driven foundation, while Drambuie adds honeyed sweetness together with herbs and spices. Drambuie itself is made from aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs and spices, so the two ingredients naturally share a whisky foundation. The result is strong and spirit-forward but considerably softer and sweeter than drinking Scotch on its own.

INGREDIENT GUIDE

THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A RUSTY NAIL

Choose a blended Scotch whisky with enough malt, oak and character to remain noticeable beside the liqueur. An extremely delicate whisky can disappear, while a very smoky Scotch will produce a considerably more intense variation.

For the honey liqueur, Drambuie is the classic choice. Its combination of aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs and spices gives the Rusty Nail its characteristic sweetness and aromatic depth. drambuie.com

A fresh lemon twist provides aroma rather than acidity. Expressing the peel over the glass adds bright citrus oils that contrast with the darker whisky and honey flavours.

Origins

THE STORY BEHIND THE RUSTY NAIL

The Rusty Nail became particularly associated with New York bar culture and the Rat Pack era of the 1960s. Drambuie's official history describes it as the most popular cocktail in the New York bars frequented by the Rat Pack during that period.

Drambuie's own history stretches much further back. The brand traces its origins to an 18th-century recipe associated with Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the Isle of Skye. The name was later patented by James Ross in 1893, and the Drambuie Liqueur Company was established in 1914. drambuie.com

The combination of Scotch and Drambuie ultimately became one of the best-known two-ingredient whisky cocktails.

HOW TO MAKE IT

HOW TO STIR A RUSTY NAIL

Build the cocktail directly in the serving glass.

Add the Scotch and Drambuie over good-quality ice and stir until the ingredients are combined, properly chilled and slightly diluted. Drambuie's official method similarly calls for pouring both ingredients over clear ice and stirring until chilled and diluted to taste.

There is no need to shake the drink. Shaking would introduce unnecessary aeration and cloudiness into a cocktail that should remain clear and spirit-forward.

Serving

SERVE IT PROPERLY

Serve the Rusty Nail on the rocks in an Old Fashioned glass.

The finished cocktail should be clear and amber-gold, with plenty of cold ice and no foam.

Finish with a lemon twist. Express the peel over the drink before placing it at the rim so its fresh citrus oils contrast with the whisky, honey and spice aromas. The lemon-zest garnish also matches Drambuie's current official serve.

TIPS & VARIATIONS

Keep the Scotch prominent. The 2:1 proportion gives Drambuie enough presence without allowing its sweetness to dominate the whisky.

Use good ice. Because the cocktail is served entirely over ice, large, solid cubes help keep it cold while controlling dilution.

Try a smokier Scotch. A moderately smoky whisky creates a deeper version with smoke playing against Drambuie's honey and herbs.

Adjust the sweetness. If you prefer a drier, more whisky-forward drink, slightly reduce the Drambuie rather than adding more ingredients.

Questions about the Rusty Nail

What is in a Rusty Nail?

A classic Rusty Nail contains just Scotch whisky and Drambuie, served over ice and traditionally finished with lemon zest. Drambuie's current recipe specifies 40 ml Scotch and 20 ml Drambuie.

What is Drambuie?

Drambuie is a Scottish whisky liqueur made from aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs and spices.

What Scotch should I use for a Rusty Nail?

A balanced blended Scotch is an excellent starting point because it provides clear whisky character without overwhelming Drambuie's honeyed and herbal flavours. A smokier Scotch can be used when you want a more intense variation.

Is a Rusty Nail sweet?

It has noticeable sweetness from Drambuie, but the Scotch keeps the cocktail spirit-forward. Using approximately two parts Scotch to one part Drambuie produces a balanced starting point.

Is a Rusty Nail shaken or stirred?

It is stirred, not shaken. The ingredients can be poured directly over ice in the serving glass and stirred until chilled and appropriately diluted.

Does a Rusty Nail need bitters?

No. The classic combination is simply Scotch whisky and Drambuie. The liqueur already contributes honey, herbal and spiced flavours.

How much do I need for a group?

Choose 6, 12, 24 or 48 cocktails and the quantities can be calculated for you. Each Rusty Nail requires 40 ml Scotch whisky and 20 ml honey liqueur.
