Rye Whiskey for Cocktails

Explore Drinkero's selection of rye whiskeys chosen for cocktail making. Spicy, dry and full of character, rye whiskey brings structure and depth to classic spirit-forward cocktails.

Rye Whiskey for Cocktail Making

Rye whiskey is made with a grain bill containing a high proportion of rye, giving it a typically spicier and drier profile than bourbon. Expect notes of pepper, herbs, baking spice and oak, often with less sweetness than corn-led whiskey styles.

This makes rye especially useful in cocktails where the base spirit needs to remain clearly present alongside vermouth, herbal liqueurs, bitters and other rich ingredients.

Classic Cocktails with Rye Whiskey

  • Vieux Carré — rye whiskey, Cognac, sweet vermouth, Bénédictine and aromatic bitters.
  • Manhattan — rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters.
  • Sazerac — rye whiskey, sugar, Peychaud's bitters and an absinthe rinse.
  • Monte Carlo — rye whiskey, Bénédictine and Angostura bitters.
  • Old Fashioned — rye creates a drier, spicier alternative to bourbon.

Our Rye Whiskey Choice

For cocktails such as the Vieux Carré, Drinkero recommends a rye whiskey with enough spice and strength to stand up to Cognac, vermouth and herbal liqueurs. A bold American rye works particularly well in this style of cocktail.

Selected for Cocktail Making

Drinkero focuses on rye whiskeys with a clear purpose in classic cocktail recipes. Our choices are selected for spice, structure and how well they perform with vermouth, bitters, Cognac and herbal ingredients.
