WHAT MAKES A GOOD PIÑA COLADA?
A good Piña Colada should be rich and creamy without becoming heavy or excessively sweet. Pineapple should remain fresh and fruity, coconut should add smoothness and sweetness, and the rum should still be noticeable underneath both.
The key is balance. Enough pineapple keeps the drink refreshing, while cream of coconut provides the characteristic texture. Plenty of ice chills and dilutes the ingredients while giving a blended Piña Colada its smooth consistency.

PIÑA COLADA: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS
A practical guide to making a classic Piña Colada, from choosing the right pineapple juice and cream of coconut to achieving a smooth texture and balancing rum, fruit and sweetness.
THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A PIÑA COLADA
The Piña Colada contains only three main liquid ingredients, so choosing the right balance of rum, pineapple and coconut makes a noticeable difference.
For the rum, a clean white rum works particularly well. It gives the cocktail enough sugarcane character and warmth without overpowering the pineapple and coconut.
For the pineapple, we recommend Don Simon Pineapple Juice. Its tropical fruit character provides the juicy pineapple base that defines the cocktail.
For the coconut, Drinkero recommends Coco Reàl Cream of Coconut. Unlike ordinary coconut milk, cream of coconut contributes both coconut flavour and sweetness while helping create the rich texture expected from a Piña Colada.
Fresh pineapple makes a simple finishing garnish and reinforces the tropical aroma of the drink.
HOW TO BALANCE A PIÑA COLADA
The foundation of our Piña Colada is 50 ml white rum, 90 ml pineapple juice and 30 ml cream of coconut.
The larger proportion of pineapple keeps the cocktail fruity and refreshing, while 30 ml of cream of coconut provides enough richness and sweetness without overwhelming the rum.
Too much cream of coconut can make the drink heavy and overly sweet. Too little can leave it thin and closer to a simple rum-and-pineapple drink.
Our ratio keeps all three elements clearly identifiable: rum for structure, pineapple for freshness and coconut for richness.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PIÑA COLADA
The Piña Colada is closely associated with Puerto Rico and became one of the world's best-known tropical cocktails during the twentieth century.
The modern version is widely linked to Puerto Rico in the 1950s, although several competing stories exist about exactly who created it. The combination of Puerto Rican rum, pineapple and coconut quickly became a symbol of Caribbean-style drinking.
Its name translates from Spanish as “strained pineapple”, referring to pineapple juice that has been pressed and strained.
What began as a tropical hotel and resort drink eventually spread around the world, and today the Piña Colada remains one of the most recognisable rum cocktails.
TECHNIQUE: BLEND UNTIL SMOOTH
A blended Piña Colada should be cold and creamy while remaining drinkable rather than becoming excessively thick.
Add the rum, pineapple juice and cream of coconut to the blender before adding the ice. This helps the liquid ingredients combine evenly.
Add plenty of ice and blend only until the texture becomes smooth and uniform. Blending for too long can melt unnecessary ice and make the cocktail watery.
Pour immediately into the serving glass and garnish while the drink is still properly chilled.
HOW TO SERVE A PIÑA COLADA
Serve the Piña Colada in a Hurricane glass or another tall cocktail glass.
The drink should be served very cold, with a smooth and creamy consistency from the blended ice.
Garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge. It adds fresh tropical aroma and gives the cocktail its familiar presentation without adding unnecessary sweetness.
Serve immediately after blending, before the ice begins to separate from the drink.
