CAIPIROSKA
A fresh, simple cocktail made with vodka, lime and sugar. Bright, citrusy and refreshing, the Caipiroska takes the classic Brazilian Caipirinha formula and replaces cachaça with clean, neutral vodka.
CAIPIROSKA Recipe
- Vodka 50 ml
- Fresh lime 6 wedge
- Sugar 10 g (2 teaspoons)
- Ice 200 g
Make it properly
- Add the lime wedges and fine sugar to a rocks glass.
- Gently muddle the lime to release its juice and citrus oils. Avoid crushing the peel excessively, which can make the drink bitter.
- Add the vodka and fill the glass generously with ice.
- Stir thoroughly until chilled and the sugar is well incorporated. Garnish with a fresh lime wedge if desired.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD CAIPIROSKA?
A good Caipiroska is all about fresh lime, proper muddling and balance. The lime should provide plenty of bright acidity and aromatic citrus oils without becoming overly bitter. Fine sugar softens the acidity while giving the drink a slightly richer texture, and vodka provides a clean base that allows the fresh lime to remain the dominant flavour.

CAIPIROSKA: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS
The Caipiroska is one of the simplest fresh-lime cocktails to make at home. With only vodka, lime and sugar, there is nowhere for poor ingredients or technique to hide. The key is to muddle the lime gently rather than pulverising it. You want fresh juice and some aromatic oils from the peel without extracting excessive bitterness. Serve it immediately over plenty of ice for a cold, vibrant and refreshing drink.
FROM CAIPIRINHA TO CAIPIROSKA
The Caipiroska is essentially a vodka variation of Brazil's famous Caipirinha.
The basic preparation remains the same: fresh lime is muddled with sugar and the cocktail is built directly in the serving glass over ice. The defining difference is the base spirit.
Where the Caipirinha uses cachaça and therefore carries distinctive sugarcane character, the Caipiroska uses vodka, producing a cleaner and more neutral version that places greater emphasis on the lime.
THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A CAIPIROSKA
A good Caipiroska depends on clean vodka, fresh lime and enough sugar to soften the citrus without making the drink heavy.
For the vodka, Drinkero recommends Absolut Vodka. Its clean, smooth style gives the cocktail structure without competing with the fresh lime.
Fresh lime is essential because both the juice and aromatic oils from the peel are used. Cut the lime just before making the drink and avoid bottled juice, which cannot reproduce the same fresh character.
Use fine sugar, around 2 teaspoons (10 g) per cocktail. The smaller crystals dissolve more easily as the lime is muddled.
MUDDLING THE LIME PROPERLY
The most important technique in a Caipiroska is muddling.
Place the lime wedges in the glass with the sugar and press them gently several times with a muddler. The aim is to release the juice and some aromatic oils from the peel.
Do not aggressively grind the lime into the bottom of the glass. Excessive muddling can extract too much bitterness from the white pith.
Once muddled, add the vodka and ice and stir thoroughly. Because the cocktail is built directly in the serving glass, there is no need to shake or strain it.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CAIPIROSKA
What is a Caipiroska?
A Caipiroska is a fresh lime cocktail made with vodka, lime and sugar. It is a vodka variation of the Brazilian Caipirinha.
What is the difference between a Caipiroska and a Caipirinha?
The base spirit. A Caipirinha uses cachaça, while a Caipiroska uses vodka. The other core ingredients and preparation are very similar.
Should I use lime juice or fresh lime?
Use fresh lime wedges. Muddling the fruit releases both juice and aromatic oils from the peel, which are an important part of the cocktail.
Should a Caipiroska be shaken?
No. It is normally built directly in the serving glass. Muddle the lime and sugar, add vodka and ice, then stir.
What glass should I use?
A rocks glass is the best choice.
Can I make Caipiroskas for a group?
Yes. Choose whether you're making 6, 12, 24 or 48 cocktails, and Drinkero calculates the vodka, limes, sugar and other quantities you need.
