WHAT MAKES A GOOD MANHATTAN?
A good Manhattan is rich, smooth and well balanced. Whiskey provides the structure and warmth, sweet vermouth adds herbal complexity and gentle sweetness, while aromatic bitters bring spice and depth.
Stirring with plenty of ice chills and dilutes the cocktail without losing its smooth, spirit-forward texture. A quality cocktail cherry adds a rich fruit note and completes this classic serve.

MANHATTAN: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS
A practical guide to making a classic Manhattan, from choosing the right whiskey and sweet vermouth to balancing aromatic bitters, dilution and a rich cherry finish.
THE STORY OF THE MANHATTAN
The Manhattan emerged in the United States during the late 19th century and became one of the defining whiskey cocktails. While several stories surround its exact origin, the drink became closely associated with New York and was already well established by the 1880s.
Its combination of whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters created a simple but sophisticated template that remains a cornerstone of classic cocktail making.
THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A MANHATTAN
A good Manhattan needs a whiskey with enough character to remain present alongside rich, aromatic vermouth. Drinkero recommends Wild Turkey 101 for its bold bourbon character and higher strength.
For the vermouth, Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino Vermouth di Torino adds rich herbal, citrus and spice notes, while ANGOSTURA® Aromatic Bitters provides additional depth and aromatic complexity.
Finish with a Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherry for a rich fruit character that complements the whiskey and vermouth.
HOW TO MAKE A SMOOTH MANHATTAN
A Manhattan should be stirred rather than shaken. Add the whiskey, sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters to a mixing glass with plenty of ice and stir until properly chilled and diluted.
Strain into a chilled coupe glass and finish with a cocktail cherry. The finished Manhattan should remain spirit-forward, with the richness of the whiskey balanced by herbal sweetness, aromatic spice and controlled dilution.
