Method

Make it properly

  1. Add the gin, fresh lemon juice and cane sugar syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add ice and shake firmly until well chilled.
  3. Fill a rocks glass completely with crushed ice.
  4. Strain the gin mixture over the crushed ice.
  5. Slowly pour the blackberry liqueur over the top. It should trickle through the crushed ice and create the Bramble's characteristic berry colour.
  6. Finish with two fresh blackberries and a fresh lemon slice.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BRAMBLE?

A good Bramble should still taste clearly of gin.

The blackberry liqueur adds fruit and sweetness, but it should not dominate the drink. Fresh lemon provides acidity while the sugar syrup softens the citrus without turning the cocktail sugary.

Crushed ice is also important. As it slowly melts, it lengthens the cocktail and brings the gin, lemon and blackberry together.

BRAMBLE: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS

The Bramble is one of the best examples of a modern cocktail becoming a genuine classic. Its combination of gin, fresh lemon and blackberry is simple, but the way the blackberry liqueur is poured over crushed ice gives the drink both its distinctive appearance and evolving flavour. The first sips are berry-forward, while the gin and citrus become more prominent as the drink is mixed and diluted.

INGREDIENT GUIDE

THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A BRAMBLE

A good Bramble needs a dry, juniper-forward gin, bright lemon and enough blackberry character to give the drink both fruit and depth.

Choose a London Dry Gin with clear juniper and citrus notes. For the berry component, Drinkero recommends BVLand Blackberry Liqueur 18% Vol., which adds rich blackberry flavour, sweetness and the cocktail’s distinctive colour.

Use fresh lemon juice for clean acidity and a small amount of cane sugar syrup to soften the sourness. Finish with fresh blackberries to reinforce the berry aroma without making the drink overly sweet.

Balance

HOW TO BALANCE A BRAMBLE

A Bramble depends on the balance between dry gin, fresh lemon and sweet blackberry liqueur.

Gin provides structure and botanicals, lemon keeps the drink bright, and blackberry liqueur adds fruit and sweetness. Because the liqueur is already sweet, the sugar syrup should stay restrained.

The finished cocktail should taste fresh and citrusy first, with the blackberry becoming richer and more noticeable as you drink.

Origins

THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAMBLE

The Bramble was created in London during the 1980s by bartender Dick Bradsell, one of the most influential figures in modern British cocktail culture.

Bradsell wanted to create a distinctly British cocktail and drew inspiration from memories of picking blackberries growing on bramble bushes.

The combination of gin, lemon, sugar and blackberry liqueur quickly became a modern classic and is now served in cocktail bars around the world.

TECHNIQUE

WHY THE BLACKBERRY LIQUEUR GOES IN LAST

Unlike most cocktails, the blackberry liqueur is traditionally added after the gin mixture has been poured over crushed ice.

Slowly pouring it across the top allows the dark liqueur to travel through the ice, creating the drink's characteristic bramble-like streaks of berry colour.

Do not aggressively stir it immediately.

Allow the drink to mix naturally as it is served.

A clear cut-glass tumbler filled with a pink-red iced cocktail sits on a wooden table in a softly lit indoor setting. Two blackberries and a lemon twist garnish the rim.
Serving

HOW TO SERVE A BRAMBLE

Serve the Bramble in a rocks glass filled generously with crushed ice.

For the classic presentation:

  • mound the crushed ice slightly above the rim
  • drizzle the blackberry liqueur over the top
  • garnish with two fresh blackberries
  • add a fresh lemon slice

Serve immediately while the crushed ice is still firm and cold.

Questions about the Bramble

What is a Bramble cocktail made from?

A classic Bramble contains gin, fresh lemon juice, sugar syrup and blackberry liqueur.

Is blackberry liqueur the same as crème de mûre?

Crème de mûre is the French term commonly used for a sweet blackberry liqueur. For Drinkero, we use the simpler ingredient name Blackberry Liqueur.

Can I use crème de cassis instead?

You can, but it changes the cocktail. Crème de cassis is made from blackcurrants rather than blackberries, so the flavour is noticeably different.

Why does a Bramble use crushed ice?

Crushed ice rapidly chills the cocktail and provides gradual dilution, helping soften the lemon and integrate the blackberry liqueur.

Can I make a Bramble without crushed ice?

Yes, but the texture and presentation will be different. The classic version is best served over crushed ice.

Which gin is best for a Bramble?

A traditional London Dry Gin works particularly well because its juniper and citrus character remains noticeable alongside blackberry and lemon.

How many fresh blackberries do I need?

Use approximately 2 fresh blackberries per cocktail.

That means:

  • 6 cocktails: 12 blackberries

  • 12 cocktails: 24 blackberries

  • 24 cocktails: 48 blackberries

  • 48 cocktails: 96 blackberries
Is the Bramble an official IBA cocktail?

Yes. The Bramble is included in the International Bartenders Association’s official cocktail list as a New Era cocktail. See the IBA’s official Bramble recipe for the classic specification.
