WHAT MAKES A GOOD FUZZY NAVEL?

A good Fuzzy Navel should be juicy and peach-forward without becoming excessively sweet.

The peach liqueur provides the cocktail's defining ripe-fruit character, while orange juice adds freshness, citrus and enough acidity to keep the drink balanced.

Because there are only two main ingredients, choosing a good orange juice and a peach liqueur with a clear fruit character makes a noticeable difference.

The finished drink should taste soft, fruity and refreshing with peach first and fresh orange underneath.

FUZZY NAVEL: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS

A practical guide to making a balanced Fuzzy Navel, from choosing the right peach liqueur and orange juice to getting the ratio and serving temperature right.

INGREDIENT GUIDE

THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A FUZZY NAVEL

The Fuzzy Navel is one of the simplest fruit cocktails, so both ingredients need to work well together.

For the peach component, Drinkero recommends Bols Peach Liqueur. Its ripe peach character and gentle sweetness provide the main flavour of the cocktail.

For the citrus component, use a quality 100% orange juice with a fresh, naturally fruity character. Orange juice provides the volume of the drink while balancing the sweetness of the liqueur.

Finish with a fresh orange slice for a simple garnish and additional citrus aroma.

BALANCE

HOW TO BALANCE A FUZZY NAVEL

The foundation of our Fuzzy Navel is 40 ml peach liqueur and 100 ml orange juice.

The larger quantity of orange juice keeps the drink fresh and prevents the peach liqueur from becoming overly dominant.

Using too much peach liqueur can make the cocktail heavy and sweet. Too much orange juice can hide the peach entirely.

Our ratio keeps the drink clearly peach-led while remaining juicy, citrusy and easy to drink.

Origins

THE STORY BEHIND THE FUZZY NAVEL

The Fuzzy Navel became popular during the 1980s, when peach schnapps and simple fruit-forward cocktails became especially fashionable.

Its unusual name refers directly to its ingredients: “fuzzy” represents peach, while “navel” refers to navel oranges.

The cocktail's popularity came from its simplicity. With only peach liqueur and orange juice, it could be prepared quickly without specialist equipment.

It also inspired the Hairy Navel, a stronger variation that adds vodka to the original recipe.

TECHNIQUE

TECHNIQUE: BUILD DIRECTLY IN THE GLASS

A Fuzzy Navel does not require a shaker.

Fill a highball glass generously with ice, then add the peach liqueur.

Pour in the orange juice and stir gently until the ingredients are evenly combined and chilled.

Avoid unnecessary vigorous stirring, which only increases dilution.

Finish with the orange garnish and serve immediately.

SERVING

HOW TO SERVE AN AMERICANO

Serve the Fuzzy Navel in a highball glass filled generously with ice.

The cocktail should be cold, bright and fruit-forward, with the peach and orange remaining clearly noticeable.

Garnish with a fresh orange slice for a simple citrus finish.

Serving options:

  • Classic: Highball glass + orange slice
  • Tall: Collins glass + orange slice
  • Simple: Serve without garnish
  • Stronger variation: Add vodka to turn it into a Hairy Navel

Questions about the Fuzzy Navel

What is a Fuzzy Navel made with?

A classic Fuzzy Navel combines peach liqueur and orange juice.

Does a Fuzzy Navel contain vodka?

No. A classic Fuzzy Navel does not contain vodka. Adding vodka creates a variation commonly called a Hairy Navel.

What peach liqueur should I use?

Drinkero recommends Bols Peach Liqueur for its clear peach character and balanced sweetness.

Can I use 100% orange juice?

Yes. A quality 100% orange juice works particularly well because it gives the drink fresh citrus flavour and natural fruit sweetness.

Should a Fuzzy Navel be shaken?

No. Our recipe is designed to be built directly in the serving glass and stirred gently over ice.

Is a Fuzzy Navel a strong cocktail?

It is generally lighter than many spirit-based cocktails because its alcoholic component is peach liqueur rather than a full measure of vodka, rum or gin.

Can I make Fuzzy Navels for a group?

Yes. Choose whether you're making 6, 12, 24 or 48 Fuzzy Navels and Drinkero calculates the peach liqueur, orange juice and garnish quantities you need.
