WHAT MAKES A GOOD LONG ISLAND ICED TEA?

A good Long Island Iced Tea should taste balanced and refreshing rather than simply strong.

Although the recipe contains several spirits, none should dominate. The vodka provides neutrality, gin adds botanical character, tequila brings agave notes, rum contributes soft sweetness and orange liqueur ties the spirits together with citrus.

Fresh lemon and sugar create the sour backbone, while a small amount of cola adds sweetness, colour and carbonation. The finished drink should remain bright, citrusy and surprisingly smooth.

LONG ISLAND ICED TEA: RECIPE, INGREDIENTS & TIPS

A practical guide to making a balanced Long Island Iced Tea, from combining five different spirits to getting the lemon, sweetness and cola proportions right.

INGREDIENT GUIDE

THE BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A LONG ISLAND ICED TEA

The Long Island Iced Tea contains several spirits, but the goal is not to showcase one bottle. The ingredients should work together to create a single balanced drink.

For the vodka, choose a clean and neutral style that adds strength without competing with the other flavours.

A classic dry gin contributes subtle botanical notes and freshness.

For the tequila, Drinkero recommends a Blanco tequila with a clean agave character that remains noticeable without dominating.

A good white rum adds gentle sugarcane sweetness and rounds out the spirit blend.

For the orange component, use a quality orange liqueur to connect the citrus and spirit flavours.

Fresh lemon juice is essential for acidity, while cane sugar syrup softens the sharpness and balances the drink.

Finally, a small amount of Coca-Cola Original Taste adds colour, sweetness and carbonation without turning the cocktail into a simple cola highball.

Balance

HOW TO BALANCE A LONG ISLAND ICED TEA

Our recipe uses 15 ml each of vodka, gin, tequila, white rum and orange liqueur, creating an equal-parts spirit base.

To balance that mixture, we add 25 ml fresh lemon juice and 15 ml cane sugar syrup.

The lemon provides enough acidity to keep the cocktail bright, while the syrup softens the sharp edges of the spirit blend.

Only 30 ml Coca-Cola is used. The cola should finish the drink rather than dominate it. Too much cola can hide the citrus and spirits and turn the cocktail overly sweet.

The result should taste citrusy and refreshing first, with the strength of the spirits integrated rather than aggressive.

Origins

THE STORY BEHIND THE LONG ISLAND ICED TEA

Despite its name, the Long Island Iced Tea contains no tea.

The modern version is generally associated with the United States and became widely popular during the 1970s. Its name comes from the finished drink's amber colour, which resembles iced tea after cola is added.

Different stories exist about exactly who created the cocktail, but the combination of multiple clear spirits, citrus, sugar and cola eventually became a modern bar classic.

Its popularity comes partly from its unusual construction: several different spirits combine into a drink that tastes much smoother and more refreshing than its ingredient list might suggest.

TECHNIQUE

TECHNIQUE: BUILD & STIR GENTLY

The Long Island Iced Tea can be made directly in the serving glass, making it simple to prepare even with its longer ingredient list.

Fill a highball glass generously with ice before adding the spirits, orange liqueur, lemon juice and sugar syrup.

Stir briefly to combine and chill the ingredients.

Add the Coca-Cola last and stir gently. Excessive stirring will release carbonation and make the finished drink flatter.

Serve immediately while the drink is cold and sparkling.

serving

HOW TO SERVE A LONG ISLAND ICED TEA

Serve the Long Island Iced Tea in a highball glass filled generously with ice.

The cocktail should be cold and refreshing, with enough cola to provide its characteristic amber colour while still allowing the citrus and spirit blend to remain noticeable.

Finish with a fresh lemon wedge for additional citrus aroma.

Serving options:

  • Classic: Highball glass + lemon wedge
  • Tall: Collins glass + lemon wedge
  • Extra citrus: Add a thin lemon wheel alongside the wedge
  • Lighter style: Add slightly more cola for a longer, softer drink

Questions about the Long Island Iced Tea

What is a Long Island Iced Tea made with?

A classic Long Island Iced Tea combines vodka, gin, tequila, white rum, orange liqueur, lemon juice, sugar syrup and cola.

Does a Long Island Iced Tea contain tea?

No. The cocktail contains no actual tea. Its name comes from the amber colour created when cola is added.

Why does a Long Island Iced Tea use so many spirits?

Each spirit contributes a different element while being used in a relatively small quantity. Together they create a complex but surprisingly balanced cocktail.

What cola should I use?

Drinkero recommends Coca-Cola Original Taste. Only a small amount is needed to add sweetness, carbonation and the characteristic colour of the cocktail.

How strong is a Long Island Iced Tea?

It is stronger than many standard highballs because it contains several spirits. The balanced lemon, sugar, ice and cola can make the alcohol taste less obvious, so it should still be enjoyed responsibly.

Is the Long Island Iced Tea an official IBA cocktail?

Yes. The Long Island Iced Tea is included in the International Bartenders Association’s official cocktail list as a Contemporary Classic. See the IBA’s official Long Island Iced Tea recipe for the classic specification.
