KAS LEMIA GERĄ AMERICANO?
The defining ingredient is Scotch whisky.
A Manhattan traditionally uses American whiskey, while a Rob Roy uses Scotch. Sweet vermouth and bitters complete the classic three-part structure. Modern recipes commonly favour approximately two parts Scotch to one part vermouth, although historical versions varied considerably. Liquor.com
It is a small substitution on paper, but Scotch gives the finished cocktail a noticeably different flavour profile.

AMERICANO: RECEPTAS, INGREDIENTAI IR PATARIMAI
The Rob Roy is one of the simplest ways to turn Scotch into a proper classic cocktail. It follows the familiar Manhattan structure of whisky, sweet vermouth and bitters but changes the base spirit to Scotch. That single change gives the drink its own character. Scotch brings malt, oak and sometimes subtle smoke, while sweet vermouth contributes fruit, herbs and gentle sweetness. Aromatic bitters pull everything together with concentrated spice. The result is rich and spirit-forward, but softer and more aromatic than Scotch served neat.
GERIAUSI AMERICANO INGREDIENTAI
A blended Scotch whisky is an excellent choice. Look for something balanced and expressive rather than extremely smoky, allowing the whisky to work alongside the vermouth instead of overpowering it. Blended Scotch is also a common recommendation for the cocktail. Liquor.com
Choose a good sweet vermouth with enough herbal and fruit character to stand beside the Scotch. Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino works particularly well here, bringing rich spice and aromatic complexity.
Aromatic bitters provide the finishing layer of spice. Angostura is a practical classic choice, although historical and contemporary Rob Roy recipes have also used orange and other bitters. diffordsguide.com
Finish with a maraschino cherry for a simple classic presentation.
KAIP SUBALANSUOTI AMERICANO
A 2:1 whisky-to-vermouth ratio is an excellent starting point.
Using 50 ml Scotch and 25 ml sweet vermouth keeps the whisky at the centre while giving the vermouth enough room to contribute sweetness, fruit and herbal complexity. Modern Rob Roy recipes commonly use this general 2:1 structure.
Bitters should remain an accent. Two dashes add spice and aromatic depth without obscuring the character of the Scotch.
Because there is no citrus or syrup, proper dilution from stirring is especially important.
AMERICANO ISTORIJA
The Rob Roy is strongly associated with New York in the 1890s and with the original Waldorf hotel. The familiar story connects its creation to the 1894 operetta Rob Roy, written by Reginald De Koven and Harry B. Smith and staged at the nearby Herald Square Theatre.
The historical picture is more complicated, however. Research collected by Difford's Guide shows that a drink called a Rob Roy existed as early as 1873, although it was very different from today's recipe. A Scotch-based Manhattan was documented in 1884, and by the early 1900s recipes recognisable as the modern combination of Scotch, vermouth and bitters were appearing in cocktail books.
Whatever its precise point of creation, the Rob Roy became established as the Scotch counterpart to the Manhattan and has remained one of the best-known classic Scotch cocktails.
KAIP PAGAMINTI
A Rob Roy should be stirred, not shaken.
Combine the Scotch, sweet vermouth and bitters with plenty of cold ice and stir for around 20–25 seconds. This chills and dilutes the cocktail while preserving the smooth, clear texture expected from a spirit-forward drink.
Strain immediately into a chilled coupe. There should be no ice in the serving glass.
KAIP PATIEKTI AMERICANO
Serve the Rob Roy straight up in a chilled coupe.
The finished drink should have a clear, deep amber to reddish-brown appearance, depending on the Scotch and vermouth used.
Finish with one maraschino cherry. This gives the drink a clean presentation and adds a subtle fruit aroma without changing its whisky-forward character.

TIPS & VARIATIONS
Don't overpower it with smoke. A heavily peated Scotch can dominate the vermouth. Start with a balanced blended Scotch and explore smokier versions later.
Keep the vermouth refrigerated. Sweet vermouth is wine-based and should be refrigerated after opening to preserve its flavour.
Try a Dry Rob Roy. Replace the sweet vermouth with dry vermouth for a considerably drier variation. Liquor.com
Make it Perfect. Split the vermouth between sweet and dry vermouth to create a Perfect Rob Roy.
Klausimai apie
What is in a Rob Roy?
A Rob Roy combines Scotch whisky, sweet vermouth and bitters. It is stirred with ice, strained into a chilled cocktail glass and commonly garnished with a cherry.
What is the difference between a Rob Roy and a Manhattan?
The main difference is the whisky. A Manhattan uses American whiskey, traditionally rye or bourbon, while a Rob Roy uses Scotch whisky.
What Scotch should I use for a Rob Roy?
A balanced blended Scotch is an excellent starting point. It should have enough whisky character to remain noticeable alongside the vermouth without being so heavily peated that it dominates the cocktail.
Is a Rob Roy shaken or stirred?
A Rob Roy is stirred with ice and then strained into a chilled glass. Stirring gives this all-spirit cocktail the smooth texture and controlled dilution it needs.
Is a Rob Roy served with ice?
The classic straight-up presentation is strained into a chilled coupe, Nick & Nora or cocktail glass without serving ice.
What garnish goes on a Rob Roy?
A maraschino or brandied cherry is a common modern garnish. Lemon or orange zest also appears in respected recipes, so garnish conventions are not completely fixed.
How much do I need for a group?
Choose 6, 12, 24 or 48 cocktails and the quantities are calculated for you. Each Rob Roy uses 50 ml Scotch whisky, 25 ml sweet vermouth and 2 dashes aromatic bitters.
